Ellie Goulding is a 24 year old indie/electro/pop singer-songwriter from London. Her debut studio album “Lights” was released in Europe in 2010 which premiered at #1 on the U.K. album chart while selling over 380,000 copies. With 4 hit singles that she co-wrote and a BRIT award under her belt, Ellie is ready to bring her enchanted melodies to the states.
“I’m really excited to come to America and visit new places and see new countryside. I feel ready to introduce my music and see what people think of it there. I’m hoping they’ll like it and be inspired, the way I was when I first heard certain artists. I want to create that excitement you get when you’ve discovered something special and feel happy to have ever come across it in the first place.”
Ellie has been playing music since the age of 9 and has been singing/songwriting since 15. After winning a talent competition at the University of Kent in Canterbury, Ellie realized that this was her calling. She then teamed up with British electro/pop musician and producer Frankmusik and began writings songs together. Ellie then sent her demos to remixer/composer/musician Starsmith and began making tracks in 2009. Goulding then signed a record deal with Polydor Records.
Ellie’s hauntingly beautiful voice has already gained her much attention in the U.S. Her first single “Starry Eyed” has already been a huge hit along with the many remixes that followed. Ellie quotes:
“The song is about letting go. As opposed to all the sad and depressing things I write about, I decided to write something about the joining together of people in some kind of euphoric state—be it at a festival, at a show or in a club. I wanted a song that would reach out to people of every background and every enjoyment, whether you enjoy a natural high, taking drugs, drinking or whatever. Because I’m essentially a pop artist I wanted to write a song that everyone can relate to.”
Ellie has been compared to other music artists such as Kate Nash, Lykke Li, Tracey Thorn and Björk but her style is still all her own. Her melodic sounds and deep lyrics will have your heart melting as well as breaking while sending chills down your spine. Her album “Lights” is to be released in the U.S. on March 8, 2011 and I will definitely be checking out her performance at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA on Sunday April 17th.
