Yesterday, July 23rd the world lost a wonderful voice, but an incredibly troubled voice. Amy Winehouse, the iconic soul and R&B singer was discovered dead yesterday in her Camden, UK home. Currently, police are not entirely certain what the cause of her death is. A spokesman for Scotland Yard told the UK’s Mirror yesterday, “Police called by London Ambulance Service shortly before 4.05pm following reports of a woman found deceased. Officers found a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. This looks like she has died after a drink and drugs binge.”
Winehouse had only recently cancelled her European tour after allegedly appearing drunk on a stage in Belgrade. You can find a number of videos on YouTube showing her performance from this show. Granted, this was not news to anyone, as her performances at other festivals also showcased her alcohol problem far more than her music, at times.
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings issued the following statement: “We are very sad to have lost Amy Winehouse today. She was one of a kind and we were fortunate to have had the chance to make music with her. She was always gracious and a pleasure to work with in the studio and on the road. She brought a lot of people joy with her voice and her irreverent personality. It is a tragedy that she was taken from us so soon when she had much more music to give.” Similar statements have been made by a variety of other performers. Outpourings of sympathy have been made by her fans, as well.
Winehouse’s mother, Janis Winehouse, told The Daily Mirror Sunday she believed Amy’s death was “only a matter of time” after seeing her just a day prior to her death.
News from a variety of credible sources now say that her death could have been due to a seizure, caused by her excessive use of alcohol while on the drug ecstasy. Her friends and acquaintances have said that over the past few days, she was on a self-destructive path with wild and intense drinking binges. Although the results of her postmortem exam have yet to be concluded, some people have said that her death was ultimately due to a seizure, caused by both drugs and alcohol.
As the world mourns her death, we would like to remind everyone of the incredible gift she gave to us in her soulful music. Rest in peace, Amy.
